The news that RTL will discontinue its free-to-air Formula 1 coverage came as a shock to all German fans. As a result, Sky now has exclusive rights for broadcasting F1 in Germany. After a season cut short by the ongoing pandemic, the 2021 Formula 1 World Championship will feature a record number of 23 races.

In terms of major car components, the 2021 season leaves the impression that not much is changing. However, there have been a few alterations to the aero capability of cars. First up, to mitigate the downforce on the tires, the car floor has been narrowed at the back by 10cm. Furthermore, whirlwind-creating slots in the floor have been ousted which lowers the capability of the underfloor seal. Lateral slots ahead of the tire are history as well. 5cm have been scrapped off the diffuser fences, while the rear brake ducts have been limited to a maximum width of 4cm.

In terms of tire construction, Pirelli stiffened the construction around the shoulder area of the tire, in the hope of allowing lower minimum pressure and more usability across a variety of temperatures. It remains to be seen though how this will impact the aerodynamic performance in a very aero-sensitive part of the car.

The 2021 F1 season promises a three-way fight between Mercedes, Ferrari, and Red Bull for both the drivers’ and constructors’ World-Championship.

Mercedes

The team to beat. This year’s driver line-up remains unchanged, with Lewis Hamilton – who's signed a new one-year contract – and Valtteri Bottas.

Seven-time champion and current title-holder Lewis Hamilton will be looking to go one title above Michael Schumacher’s tally of seven titles. However, a lot of shade was thrown over the brit’s recent performances by George Russel's miracle drive during last season’s final race. The question on everybody’s lips is whether it’s the car that makes the driver or vice versa. There’s no doubt that Lewis plans on silencing all doubters of his driving ability with another dominant display on the race tracks.

Meanwhile, his team mate, Valteri Bottas remains under pressure of keeping his seat for another year. However, this has been business as usual for the Finn.

Ferrari

Sebastian Vettel is now history for Ferrari. His replacement by Carlos Sainz Jr. means that for the first time in the last 25 years, the famous Rosso Corsa will not feature a world champion.

The future looks bright for the Scuderia, though. Both Sainz and Charles Leclerc have proven to be two of F1's new generation's best drivers.

Another team novelty is a much needed new engine. It remains to be seen if the added power will be enough to allow Ferrari to compete at the very top.

Red Bull

The arrival of Sergio Perez at Red Bull surely turned a few heads. And not because Sergio does not have what it takes. He certainly proved he’s one of the best during his stay at Racing Point/Force India. However, the surprise came, because since 2007, Red Bull has gone outside their tried-and-trusted driver development program for the first time.

As for Max Verstappen, his team-mate, what more can there be said about him? The super-talented Dutchman will start his 5th season at the team, and with a little more consistency, he should be able to mount a title challenge.

McLaren

McLaren has a few things to show for before the start of the new season. Firstly, for the first time since 2014, the team returns to a Mercedes-powered engine. Daniel Ricciardo is the next big arrival for the Woking squad. British wonderkid Lando Norris completes the team’s driver setup.

Alpine (former Renault)

New team name. New drivers. New car. Fernando Alonso returns to the team where he won two consecutive titles in 2005 and 2006. Esteban Ocon will feature as his teammate as Alpine will try to rise to the challenge of competing for a top 5 finish in the Constructor’s Championship.

To aid their cause, the team car went through a significant overhaul, despite chassis freezes imposed for this season. Technical chief Pat Fry hinted towards changes to everything other than nose, chassis, engine, and gearbox.

Haas

Nostalgic Formula One fans will keep their eyes peeled for team Haas this season. Romain Grosjean and Kevin Magnussen are yesterday’s news. And Schumacher is the future. Mich Schumacher that is – none other than the son of seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher. Russian Nikita Mazepin – another youngster, coming from the Formula 2 Championship - will link up with him, as the American outfit looks to put in place the building blocks for long-term growth.

Aston Martin

1960 was the last year when Aston Martin featured as a Formula 1 outfit. Taking the hot seat from Racing Point, Aston Martin has set itself high expectations in the form of outperforming their ‘formidable’ rivals, Ferrari and McLaren.

And they sure have the drivers to show for their ambitions. Four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel will partner-up with Lance Stroll.

Alfa Romeo Racing

Curiously, Alfa Romeo is one of the three teams that have not changed anything about their line-up. 2020 was a season the team is surely eager to put behind them. The car was not competitive, and the results spoke for themselves. The 8 points gathered in the driver’s championship were evenly split between Kimi Iceman Raikkonen and Antonio Giovinazzi.

That’s a major step back from the 57 points the team picked up back in 2019. So, for this season, the Switzerland-based outfit needs to step-up its game big time.

Williams

High expectations – this is what best defines Williams coming 2021 F1 season. The team received a much needed injection of funds when it was purchased by Dorilton Capital in August last year. According to Team Principal – Simon Roberts – this should allow the team to operate near the budget of teams like Ferrari or Mercedes.

For now, the future looks brighter than ever. The two pilots, George Russel and Nicholas Latifi are some of the most talented of their generation. Give them a competitive car, and they shall deliver.

Alpha Tauri

2020 was surely a season to remember for Alpha Tauri. Pierre Gasly brought home their very first podium at Monza – and not just any podium, but one where they occupied the highest spot.

As a result, the Frenchman will keep his seat within the team. His partner from last year, however, Daniil Kvyat, was not so lucky. F2 driver Yuki Tsunoda will replace him. The signing of the young Japanese driver made people wonder whether Honda – the engine supplier – had anything to do with it. Team principal Franz Tost was quick to dismiss all accusations by stating he only had the team’s best interest in mind when signing Yuki.

The pressure now rests on the shoulders of the Japanese driver. If he can be half as spectacular as Kamui Kobayashi, we're in for a treat.
