Of course, things aren’t that simple. He inevitably catches feelings for one of the girls he takes on a fake date. Even though the movie kind of skirts around the taboo aspect of the escort profession (or as Brooks calls it, chaperoning), it does offer its fair share of funny social commentary.

Chaos ensues as Harper’s dad (Victor Garber) tries to impress donors as a mayoral candidate, her uptight family piles on the holiday tradition, and old exes keep showing up. The story is well-written and does a great job of mixing comedy and heartfelt moments without falling into some of the more worn-out Meet the Parents cliches. Aubrey Plaza (as Harper’s ex) and Daniel Levy (as Abby’s BFF) are amazing supporting characters in their own right too.

The pair don’t even get to announce their relationship before Peter’s mother (Kathy Najimy) sets him up with a blind date from her gym. The rest of the family has other plans, though, as they think Peter and Nick really belong together.
This movie does a fantastic job of playing up the “best friends who are secretly in love” plot without resorting to overused tropes. The movie is just the right one with many sibling antics, adorable Christmas moments, hot guys in Santa outfits, and Aunt Sandy (Jennifer Coolidge) directing a nativity scene.
