Unless you’ve been taking a tech sabbatical, you’ve probably heard about OpenAI’s ChatGPT. The ultra smart chatbot captured the world’s attention when it came out to the public in November 2022.
Just a couple of months after release, a UBS study revealed ChatGPT amassed more than 100 million users, becoming the fastest growing app in human history. It also disrupted the very fabric of many industries and institutions. ChatGPT’s ability to write longform academic essays upended the world of written examinations and content writing.
As with certain industries, some countries didn’t know how to deal with ChatGPT and decided to ban it. If you get an error message saying OpenAI isn’t available, it might be because your country or local network has banned it.
If this happens, don’t worry! You can securely bypass these network blocks and use OpenAI’s ChatGPT with a VPN. Before I explain how, let’s take a look at why OpenAI’s tools are so revolutionary and controversial.
You can securely access ChatGPT on any network with CyberGhost VPN. Use CyberGhost VPN to enjoy access to thousands of secure VPN servers worldwide and browse the web without restrictions.
What Is OpenAI and What Can It Do?
OpenAI is an artificial intelligence research (AI) and development company. The organization first launched as a non-profit group in 2015 with funding from big names like Elon Musk, Sam Altman, and Peter Thiel. The company gained serious notoriety after it released an updated version of ChatGPT in late 2022.
OpenAI offers many tools, including automatic speech recognition, coding, and image creation from written instructions. While the company has a range of AI products, ChatGPT is by far the most revolutionary and popular. ChatGPT has the ability to write essays, blogs, and even computer code. Low-level malicious hackers have used it to launch cyberattacks.
What Is ChatGPT?
OpenAI’s ChatGPT is an extremely versatile tool with superhuman skills. It performs extremely well whether you’re asking it to tell a dad joke, write you a work resume, or write malicious code. Given its ability to cause worldwide disruption, it’s not surprising many schools and organizations have banned ChatGPT.
It draws information from a high volume of databases enabling it to answer questions, write blog posts and computer code, rewrite text, and more.
When OpenAI launched the ChatGPT prototype, it gained popularity quickly. Tech figureheads across the globe recognize it as a revolutionary tool. Even Microsoft’s Bill Gates predicts it’ll be “as fundamental as the PC”.
Why Is OpenAI Not Available In Your Country?
Several countries don’t allow access to ChatGPT but their reasons aren’t always clear. We can only speculate on what their reasons might be. In countries like China and Iran where heavy internet censorship is a part of daily life, we can assume the reason for blocking ChatGPT is to restrict the flow of information.
You can ask ChatGPT anything, and the answer it gives you is based on which databases it has access to. For governments who censor citizens, limit freedom of expression, and block news, ChatGPT would be problematic. As a result, your government can choose to make OpenAI not available in your country.
OpenAI may also choose not to operate in a country because of legal complications or political sensitivities. Italy banned the chatbot due to privacy concerns and is launching an investigation to scrutinize whether the program obeys GDPR guidelines.
Here’s a list of current countries that block ChatGPT:
- North Korea
It’s not surprising to see China, North Korea, or Iran on this list, but Italy banning the software is quite shocking. It’s the only EU country to take such drastic action and it leaves Italian citizens wondering why they’re being excluded from the fun.
ChatGPT may also be blocked at a local network level. Some schools, colleges, and universities restrict access to ChatGPT and similar platforms. Just like they limit students’ access to social media and streaming sites, they may also block other distracting websites and apps, including ChatGPT. In some cases, public Wi-Fi networks may limit access.
How to Use OpenAI If It’s Not Available In Your Country
It’s not nice if you’re curious to explore the global hype and OpenAI’s not available in your country. Thankfully, we have a solution so you can securely access OpenAI on any network. All you need is a VPN.
Use a trustworthy VPN like CyberGhost to change your computer’s IP address to another where OpenAI is available. For example, if you’re based in Russia or China where OpenAI is restricted, connect to a server in the UK, US, or Canada (or somewhere else where OpenAI is freely accessible). Once you do, CyberGhost VPN assigns you an IP address from that country. That way, OpenAI won’t be blocked when you visit it again.
If your school or work Wi-Fi kicks you out of ChatGPT, just connect to a local server. CyberGhost VPN wraps your connection in encryption so you can get around firewalls and browse the internet freely.
Can You Use CyberGhost VPN to Get OpenAI?
CyberGhost VPN is the perfect solution to use OpenAI tools, including ChatGPT. Connect to thousands of worldwide servers, including super-fast, secure servers in every country with unrestricted access to OpenAI.
CyberGhost VPN also uses military-grade AES 256-bit encryption to conceal your traffic from third parties. That way, no one knows you’re testing out ChatGPT. In line with our strict No Logs policy, we don’t store or share any of your personal information while you’re connected.
How to Use CyberGhost VPN to Get OpenAI
- Download the CyberGhost VPN app.
- Open the app and connect to a server where ChatGPT is available, such as the UK or US.

Although the entire world is raving about OpenAI’s new and revolutionary chatbot, citizens in some countries are forced to miss out on the hype. Countries might ban ChatGPT for censorship reasons, local network blocks might get in the way, or OpenAI might choose not to operate there because of legal complications.
Thankfully, you can securely access OpenAI with a VPN. CyberGhost VPN masks your IP and encrypts your traffic, so you can safely unblock OpenAI whether you’re at school, work, or connected to a public Wi-Fi hotspot. Explore all OpenAI has to offer without being watched!
OpenAI may not be available in your country for several reasons. It could be due to national censorship laws where the country in question wants to restrict the flow of information to its citizens. Or, it could be because local network firewalls at school or work stop you testing out OpenAI’s tools.
It might also be because OpenAI doesn’t want to deal with the complicated legal requirements or political sensitivities of a given jurisdiction. Italy claims its ban on OpenAI’s ChatGPT is due to privacy concerns and is currently investigating whether the program meets GDPR requirements.
OpenAI is available in most countries. However, some countries like China and Russia block OpenAI. If you’re visiting one of these countries and don’t want to lose access to ChatGPT or other OpenAI tools, use CyberGhost VPN to take your ChatGPT account with you.
Only a handful of countries restrict OpenAI, including:
- North Korea
You can securely access ChatGPT in restricted countries with a VPN. Use CyberGhost VPN to mask your IP address and encrypt your connection. That way, you can quickly get around firewalls to regain access to your account.

WHY OPENAI IS BANNED IN VENEZUELA?
Posted on 16/05/2023 at 10:27
Thanks for your comment. It’s a good question. It’s hard to know the exact reason for OpenAi being banned in Venezuela.
However, it’s usually either because the country’s government ban it directly, or the laws are too difficult for OpenAi to work around.
If you’re travelling to Venezuela and want to use OpenAi, you can always consider using a VPN.
I hope this helps :slightly_smiling_face:

I have Cyberghost 8 and, unfortunately, i’m in Italy (so banned country for openai). Up to a week ago i could connect via Cyberghost, but now it seems that they’ve installed something like Cloudflare and it recognize when i’m trying to connect with it: without i got the formal message “you cannot access”, with it get the 1020 error message.
Any way to bypass this? (should i install on a different desktop?
