Internet freedom is under attack in Poland

Government surveillance is too often seen as a justified means to ensure national security. Poland had the same mindset back in 2016 when it passed a law that gave the Polish police and security services the authority to access web browsing and other telecommunication data from citizens without warrants.

As a result of the 2016 legislation, the Internal Security Agency was also free to block websites it deemed to be a threat to state security. All telecommunications can be disabled on a whim in case of a “state of emergency”. Polish intelligence agencies now have the right to monitor foreign citizens and all their online activity for up to 3 months.

What’s more, any Polish citizen can come under surveillance with no warning or explanation. And despite Poles protesting this as a blow to human rights, privacy is now at an absolute low in the country.

Online censorship and blocked domains

Back in 2009, a mandatory data retention law was signed, obligating all Polish Internet Service Providers to store data for up to 2 years. This even goes beyond what is required by the European data retention directive. Combine this with the effects of the 2016 bill, and you get a recipe for disaster. Now authorities can easily access citizen’s digital data with no reason whatsoever. No, you don’t even need to be suspected of any crime to have your privacy invaded like this.

Also, let’s not forget that in 2016 the government began implementing filtering mechanisms to block specific websites or apps.

These measures were enacted by the Parliament and were not up for the debate, which was concerning for both digital freedom and free speech advocates.

These changes enabled Polish authorities to crack down on online gambling domains. ISPs were quick to comply to block sites likes Marathonbet, Bet-at-home, and Vulkanbet, since they otherwise risked a fine of up to PLN 250,000.

Due to the sensitive political climate, criticism and satire have often been shut down too. And after the famous incident with Kataryna who was accused of defamation,Poland enacted several laws which restricted public expression. This remains a troubling move for online journalists and bloggers

Torrents are not your safest bet in Poland

There are no specific laws around downloading copyrighted materials in Poland. And that’s a problem in itself. With no clear-cut explanation on what constitutes infringement, no one knows what’s banned and what’s allowed.

This gives copyright holders the freedom to enact their own set of rules. And despite pressure from international copyright companies, Poland has still refused to regulate what constitutes copyright infringement. Now it could face a fine of €87,000 due to failure to comply with the EU copyright directive.

This sounds like you can torrent freely in Poland, right? Wrong. Without clear regulations, copyright holders take matters into their own hands. With the help of third parties, they actively search IP addresses engaging in P2P activity. After discovering the culprit, they go to the police or, worse, to court.

Police have reportedly visited homes and seized hundreds of computers that shared copyrighted material without permission. Supposedly KickassTorrents founder, Artem Vaulin, was arrested in Poland this way.

Outdated laws in the country also state that sharing or selling copyrighted material is a criminal matter which can be punished with imprisonment of up to two years. This has not been updated to reflect the online environment of file-sharing.

Polish cybercrime is on the rise

Over 60% of Poles are concerned about criminals on the internet. And it’s no surprise if you consider how many cyber-attacks have taken place there.

In 2017, a malware attack swooped over the Polish banking sector. The goal was to exfiltrate data to an external server. The scariest part is that there’s no exact estimate on what and how much data was compromised.

The Polish Foreign Ministry was also the target of a cyber espionage group, APT28. The attack on the ministry servers was foiled, but the network has already proven itself vulnerable to such attacks.

And it’s no surprise when you think that even a teenager was able to hack his way into a train network. Apparently, he just thought it was a funny prank to derail trams and tracks. Four trams were left off course, and others had to make emergency stops, as people had gotten hurt in the chaos.

But it’s not just companies and public figures that are susceptible to such attacks. Wi-Fi networks can also be like Pandora’s box, since they’re often unsecured. This enables hackers to develop dozens of methods to gain access to your devices.

Access your favorite content when traveling abroad

Traveling can be the best way to discover the world and unwind. But at the end of the day, nothing beats resting and watching a good show. The bad part is that what you enjoy at home is often geo-restricted and can only be accessed from within Polish borders.

With CyberGhost VPN, you’ll never find your favorite content inaccessible ever again. We have over 50 VPN servers in Poland alone, which allow you to keep in touch with the latest news, trends, and communities from your homeland.

We also provide streaming servers optimized for Player content. This way, no matter where life takes you, you’ll always have a doorway back home with CyberGhost VPN.

Bypass international streaming restrictions

If you have a Netflix subscription, you might already be familiar with the fact that a good chunk of movies and series are not available in Poland. This is due to copyright issues. The same thing is true for Amazon Prime, YouTube Premium, and plenty of other streaming services.

And since the government demands fees from American channels, it’s unlikely that these streaming companies are incentivized to bring more shows to Poland.

Other renowned streaming services like the BBC or Crunchyroll are entirely unavailable in Poland. You’re pretty much left to either risk downloading your shows from shady sites or give up on them.

To impose these geo-restrictions on you, streaming services detect your location based on your IP address and give you access to just some of their content.

In this case, CyberGhost VPN is the perfect workaround.

Our VPN software hides your IP address and replaces it with another one from our system. This means that no one will be able to tell your real location anymore, and streaming content will no longer be geo-restricted.

Keep all your gadgets safe

CyberGhost VPN was designed with privacy in mind. Seeing as how most of our devices nowadays are always connected to the internet, it’s crucial to secure them.

Using a proxy in Poland might seem like a tempting idea. But proxies lack the encryption and security features necessary for a truly private connection. Not to mention that there are no fail-safes in place to keep your data from leaking or being gathered by third parties.

This is why we have apps optimized for Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, Amazon Fire TV & Fire Stick, Android TV, and Linux.

Also, keep in mind that just one CyberGhost VPN subscription is enough to protect up to 7 devices simultaneously.
