Geo-blocking, also known as geoblocking or geo-restriction, is a method of restricting access to online content, websites, apps, or services based on a user’s geographic location. It’s typically enforced by checking the user’s IP address against geolocation databases that map IP addresses to specific countries or regions. Service providers use geo-blocking to comply with regional licensing agreements, copyright laws, or government regulations.

How Geo-Blocking Works

When a device requests access to a website or service, the platform checks the incoming IP address against a geolocation database that maps IP ranges to countries, regions, or cities. If the detected location falls outside the permitted area, the service may block the request, redirect the user, or limit the available content.

Geo-blocking can be enforced at multiple layers:

• DNS filtering: Prevents domain resolution or redirects queries based on geographic policy, blocking access early in the connection process.
• Content delivery networks (CDN) layer: Filters traffic before it reaches the origin servers.

• Region-specific pricing: The same product or subscription can have different prices based on location, currency, taxes, or local market conditions.
• Payment declined: A transaction may fail if details like the payment card, billing address, IP address, or device location don’t match the expected country or fraud checks.
• Access denied: A website or online store blocks access and shows a message like “not available in your country” after detecting the visitor’s location.
• Different content libraries: Media platforms offer different shows, movies, or content depending on the region. Banking platforms, workplace systems, and online stores may also limit access based on location to reduce fraud risks or enforce regional policies.
• Redirected to a different version: Websites can automatically send visitors to a regional version, which may have different content, features, or pricing.
