Wake-on-LAN (WoL) is a special data packet sent over Ethernet that can turn on or wake up a sleeping computer. It’s supported on many modern Windows, macOS, Linux, and NAS devices, as long as the network hardware and firmware both support WoL and have it enabled.

How Does Wake-on-LAN Work?

  1. The target computer is shut down or sleeping: Even in this state, the network interface card (NIC) draws a small amount of standby power from the PSU and stays in a passive listening mode on the network.
  2. A magic packet is created: Another device on the network generates the magic packet — six bytes of 0xFF, followed by the target machine's MAC address written out 16 times in a row. 
  3. The packet is broadcast across the network: The magic packet is sent as a UDP broadcast, so it reaches every device on the local network.
  4. The NIC intercepts and recognizes the packet: The listening NIC scans incoming traffic for the magic packet pattern. When it finds its own MAC address, it knows the packet is intended for it.
  5. The NIC triggers the power-on signal: The NIC sends a wake signal to the motherboard, and the computer boots up normally.

It depends. WoL doesn't come with built-in security, so anyone on your network who knows your MAC address can potentially send a magic packet and wake your machine. Over the internet, things get riskier since you'd need to open a router port with no way to verify who's sending the signal.
