The internet set off an explosion of unprecedented access to information. For political, social, and economic reasons, it created a scramble for control over who got access to online content. The result? Mass censorship of online information. Your government, school, workplace, and even private organizations can restrict what content you see or publish online.
More concerning, governments can enforce harsh internet censorship regulations, even banning entire websites, search engines, and platforms. Along with absolute bans, censors can also monitor your internet activity and store your data. No, this isn't an episode of Black Mirror.
This is internet censorship — and it’s growing. You don’t have to lay down. Fight back for your right to an open internet with CyberGhost VPN.
It’s difficult to know the true motives behind internet censorship because it’s often unclear why certain information is blocked. The censored information is then regarded as harmful only because it meets an arbitrary standard.
It’s not always clear what, if any, checks and balances exist to ensure censorship is fair and objective. This creates an environment that allows censors to wield unchecked power over you.
Whether for political or social reasons, censorship ultimately silences dissent. In some countries, expressing yourself can be fatal.
The more websites governments and organizations block, the less able you are to make informed opinions and decisions. Censorship also creates information-access disparities based on the country you happen to be in.
Governments and organizations allocate enormous resources to enforce online censorship. Those resources could be invested in helping you improve your daily life.
A VPN is a powerful anti-censorship tool to have in your belt. It’ll mask and replace your actual IP address with a different IP one to conceal your true location. This way it’ll seem as if you’re logging on from an unrestricted location even if you’re in a country with tough internet censorship.
VPNs also encrypt your internet traffic, so anything you say or do online is indecipherable. If your ISP, the government, or other censors ever intercept your data, they won’t be able to read it to see what you’re up to.

1. North Korea
Frequent North Korean websites? Probably not, and how could you? Internet freedom doesn’t exist in the country. The North Korean government has restricted all global internet access. ‘Kwangmyong’, a highly censored and filtered online network, is the only form of internet North Koreans can access.
We call it the Great Firewall of China for good reason. You do have some internet access in China, but it’s heavily restricted. Certain websites like Google, Facebook, and YouTube are banned completely. China has also implemented intense monitoring and surveillance programs.
The Russian government is not a fan of internet freedom. If your IP address, URL, or domain name makes it onto Russia’s centralized internet blacklist, the Russian government will censor you. Russia has also banned most VPNs, so access to blocked sites like LinkedIn is impossible. It gets worse. The government slows down connection speeds to further disrupt your online access.
It’s no easy feat to get connected in Turkmenistan. The government there has outright blocked Zoom, WhatsApp, Telegram, and Facebook and has outlawed VPNs. Even if a site isn’t completely blocked, the Turkmenistan government will still censor and monitor it. High data costs and weak connection speeds make even basic online access a challenge.
The Iranian government has a low tolerance for online freedom. It has blocked millions of social media, news, and streaming sites because they’re seen as immoral. You can face imprisonment if you breach Iran’s censorship laws. The Iranian government has also imposed internet blackouts during times of civil unrest.
1. IP Blocks
Censorship bodies blacklist and block certain IP addresses of sites they don't want you to access. Your ISP will kill your internet connection if you attempt to access a blacklisted site.
2. DNS Spoofing
A censor can block your access to a website by changing the domain names of the site. Once the censor changes the domain name, you’ll automatically be redirected to an entirely different site. You’ll have no way to connect to the original site.
3. Deep Packet Inspection
Censors use deep packet inspection to scan data transmitted over a network. In this way, censors can flag internet data that breach restrictions and reroute it away from you.
4. Keyword Filters
Censors will filter IP addresses and URLs for certain keywords that relate to or are associated with restricted content. If an IP address or URL contains certain keywords, censors will block access to those sites.
5. Port Blocking
Internet traffic travels through different ports and unfortunately a censor can block them. This means that censors can restrict your access to websites and to entire applications as well.
The only thing you can do to escape internet censorship is to use a VPN. By rerouting your traffic through a server located in a country where censorship does not exist, you will be able to enjoy everything the internet has to offer no matter where you are located.
Governments employ internet censorship tactics when those in power want to suppress both the amount and the type of information their citizens can access. Countries like Russia, China, North Korea, Turkey, and Belarus are well-known for restricting access to social media platforms, western news outlets, and even streaming platforms.
Censorship also takes place in companies or schools to allegedly improve productivity and attention span by decreasing the time employees or students spend on the internet.
In both cases, the tool for escaping these restrictions is the same: a Virtual Private Network.
A VPN can stop internet censorship by virtually switching its users' geographical location. Choose a VPN server in a country that enjoys full access to the internet. You will be assigned an IP address of that country and your ISP won’t be able to see what you are doing.
As a result, you can bypass the traffic filters that restrict access to certain websites, apps, or games, and you'll be able to enjoy everything the internet has to offer.
DPI, or deep packet inspection, is a type of network data filtering. This process can locate, detect, categorize, block, or reroute data packets that contain specific codes or data payloads. The process is both good and bad. It can prevent worms, spyware, or viruses from entering a corporate network, but it can also be used for eavesdropping and censorship.
On the other hand, IP blocking is the banning of outside connections for certain IP addresses. If a website decides to ban your IP address, you will no longer be able to access it — unless you use a VPN to help change it.
In North Korea citizens are not allowed to access social media, watch adult content, torrent, or use a VPN. China is no better. VPNs are banned there as well as social media platforms, and only news websites that paint the government in a good light are allowed.
Other countries with strict internet censorship laws include Russia, Turkmenistan, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Belarus, Turkey, Oman, the UAE, Pakistan, and Eritrea.
