Get ready for a season to remember

Will 2020 be the year when Ferrari finally manages to stop Mercedes’ run of 5 consecutive constructor titles? Can anyone stop Lewis Hamilton from bagging a 6th World Championship title and becoming the second driver to hold that many trophies? Will Charles Leclerc live up to the hype and prove the world he has what it takes to be a Ferrari driver? It all remains to be seen.

One thing’s for sure. The 2020 Formula 1 season promises to bring back the fun, thrill, and excitement for motor racing fans. That’s because this year has brought forward a true revolution in car aerodynamics. The reason behind this revamp is to increase the number of overtakes, ensure closer racing and maximize the on-track drama.

If you want to get an insider's perspective on what goes on behind the curtains of the Formula 1 circus, make sure to check out Netflix’s documentary Formula 1: Drive to Survive.

The teams and drivers

The team to beat. This year’s driver line-up remains unchanged, with Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas. However, while Hamilton’s position in the team is as solid as can be, his team-mate finds himself under a lot of pressure. Winless in 2018, the Finn could lose his place in the team to reserve driver Esteban Ocon. It remains to be seen if he can up his game or not.

Early season tests placed Ferrari’s 2019 car ahead of its Mercedes counterpart. Whether those results can carry throughout the season or not is a big uncertainty. The drivers responsible for bringing Ferrari back on top are 4-time World Champion Sebastian Vettel, and last year’s revelation, the Monaco-born rookie Charles Leclerc.

Red Bull

2019 may prove to be a transition year for Red Bull. The team has lost two crucial assets in the Renault engines and star driver Daniel Ricciardo. Taking their places is Honda – in terms of engine supplier – and Pierre Gasly – previously of Torro Rosso – as a partner for Max Verstappen.

Having scooped last year’s third-placed driver, Daniel Ricciardo, from under Red Bull’s nose, the French team is hoping to score big. With a power unit that looks ready to challenge at the top, 2019 seems promising for the Ricciardo-Hulkenberg pair.

McLaren still seems to be living on interest from its golden years. However, with Renault engines now replacing the Honda units, the team is hoping to write a new page of F1 history. In terms of drivers, Carlos Sainz partners up with youngster Lando Norris – hailed as a future F1 champion. Keep an eye out for him.

This year, Williams will surely be drawing attention to their drivers. That’s because 2019 marks the return of Robert Kubica who partners up for Williams with F2 champion, George Russel. However, the odds for the once-great British team are not looking good. Their FW42 car was late for pre-season testing. Plus, their technical chief Paddy Lowe took a ‘leave of absence’ on the eve of the 2019 F1 season start.

Rich Energy HAAS

New teams looking to break into the F1 should watch and learn from HAAS. In just 3 years, by using a controversial strategy of building its car from parts of more established teams, the American team has become a real threat to the F1 establishment. For 2019, they’ve added a new sponsor, and HAAS hopes to bring home some strong points finishes – and, perhaps even some podium finishes. With Romain Grosjean and Kevin Magnussen as their driver line-up, HAAS has all the ingredients to make it happen.

Racing Point F1

Don’t let the name fool you. Because this is no other than the team formerly known Force India Racing. The team returns with a new name but keeps its pink colors. Taking the drivers seats are Sergio Perez and Lance Stroll – previously from Williams. Expect Racing Point F1 to battle for a mid-season finish.

Torro Rosso

After making the jump to Red Bull, Pierre Gasly will be replaced by another rookie driver, Alexander Albon. Albon will share the garage with Daniil Kvyat of Russia, who keeps his seat. In terms of engine supplier, the team will pursue its collaboration with the Japanese brand, Honda.

Alfa Romeo Racing

After an unexpectedly good 2018 season where Alfa Romeo acted solely as title sponsor for Sauber F1, the takeover is now complete. The car’s muscle will come from Ferrari, while the showmanship should be well taken care of by Kimi Iceman Raikkonen. At his side will be Antonio Giovinazzi.

Free Formula 1 2019 streaming channels

There are plenty of free streaming channels broadcasting all Formula 1 races or highlights online.

But there’s a catch. Most of these free services are geo-blocked. That means only people who live in the same country as that broadcasting service can access it. However, with CyberGhost VPN, geo-blockings turn to dust. Because with CyberGhost you can hide your IP address and replace it with a new one from our network.

With CyberGhost VPN, no matter where you are, you can access otherwise restricted platforms. To watch F1, just connect to a CyberGhost server located in the country where your desired streaming service is available.

Here’s a list of channels that offer live online F1 streaming.

Country where service is available Streaming channel
UK Channel 4 (Race highlights only + the British GP live)
Austria ORF
Italy Rai Play
Switzerland Network Ten
France TF1
Australia TenPlay (Race Highlights only & the Australian GP live)

If you try to watch F1 race highlights on TenPlay outside Australia, you will get this message.

However, this type of restriction can easily be bypassed in 3 quick steps!

  1. Sing up for CyberGhost VPN
  2. Connect to an Australian server
  3. Reload TenPlay and watch the highlights

The same steps apply for any of the services you want to use. The only difference: the CyberGhost server you connect to should be located in the country where the service you want to access is available.

Watch Formula 1 online without a cable

With online streaming platforms becoming more and more popular, cutting the cord on your cable TV seems like a natural move.

Fortunately, there are plenty of platforms that stream live Formula 1 races. Here are the top choices you can go for.

Streaming platform Price Free trial Country where the service
is available
Sling TV Starting from $25/mo 7 days US
ESPN+ $5/mo or $50/year 7 days US
Hulu $44.99/mo 7 days US
PlayStation Vue Starting from $44.99/mo 5 days US

As you can see, these are paid streaming services. The benefit is that you get a lot more than just the possibility to stream all the Formula 1 Grands Prix live online. The catch here is that you can only access these services with an American IP address. So, you need an F1 VPN. And that’s where CyberGhost comes in.

With CyberGhost VPN, getting a US IP address is as easy as it gets. Just connect to any of our 700+ US servers, and you’re set.
