The 25 Best New Year’s Eve Movies to Celebrate the End of 2024

I love New Year’s Eve as much as the next person, but the risk of losing an eye to a rogue firework or becoming another statistic turns my anxiety up to 12. Call me a chicken, but I have never gone out on New Year’s Eve, nor do I ever intend to.

In my home city, some people even throw microwaves or furniture from their balconies, and each year, hospitals are inundated with alcohol and traffic related injuries. Not to mention the splurging. Did you know most Americans spend at least $50 on food and drinks for the night? Worse, it costs upwards of $800 to welcome the New Year from LA, Chicago or New York City.

If you, like me, prefer comfort over chaos, why not stay in with some snacks and a good flick to see you through to midnight? Take your pick of the best New Year’s Eve movies, make yourself at home, and have a peaceful night!

What Makes a Good New Year’s Movie?

New Year’s Eve is no ordinary night, so why watch ordinary movies? I’ve taken it upon myself to make sure you have the most fun by only including films that meet the following criteria:

✅ On topic. New Year’s movies don’t need a festive plot, but they should stick to the theme — be it partying, new beginnings, or determined resolutions.

✅ Variety. Looking for action, thrills, or sweet romance? This list has everything from coming-of-age to disaster films.

✅ Quality. Only movies with an audience rating of at least 70% on Rotten Tomatoes are allowed here.

✅ Streamable. No need to tune in to cable, or find a hard copy to watch. The movies on this list are all available for streaming, renting or purchase on the major streaming services.

Looking for something that will leave you feeling warm? You won’t go wrong with Julie and Julia — a wholesome look at how food connects two people who have never met.

First, there’s the legend Julia Child. In the 1950s she moved to France and learned French cuisine despite everyone’s skepticism. She went on to publish the recipe book that changed the lives of housewives everywhere — Mastering French Cooking.

Then, there’s Julie Powell — a blogger in 2002 — who documents her resolve to cook every dish in Julia’s famous book.

It’s sweet and beautifully told, and if it doesn’t motivate you to try new things, I’m not sure what will!

Society is segregated, with the elite enjoying first class carriages while the poor live in squalor in the tail end of the train. Two impoverished passengers, Curtis and Edgar, lead a rebellion against the upper class to take control of the train.

It’s not very festive, but the events of Snowpiercer take place over New Year’s. If you’re tired of holiday cliches, definitely give this one a go. Chris Evans in the lead is a bonus!

Here’s another pick if you don’t want a holiday movie, but rather a story about the changing times. Dazed and Confused follows the shenanigans of a large group of teens on their last school day of the year.

The seniors are determined to haze incoming freshmen — as tradition dictates — while the freshmen do their best to avoid the harassment. Friendships are formed and broken, fights break out, and trouble is around every corner. As the day goes on, the teens learn more about who they are, what they want, and what they stand for.

Unlike other coming-of-age films, Dazed and Confused sets a standard few teen stories uphold. It’s honest, character-driven, and blunt in its portrayal of angst.
