Should you keep your VPN always on? In a word: Yes. Keeping your VPN on is one of the best ways to protect your privacy online. When it’s on, a VPN encrypts all the data you send and receive, keeping your browsing habits, location, and IP address hidden from prying eyes. Anytime you go online without it, you’re leaving yourself more open to tracking and cyberattacks.
Of course, there are a few situations where turning your VPN off might make sense. For example, if you need faster speeds for certain high-bandwidth tasks or to access services that block VPNs (like some banking apps), temporarily switching it off could help. Just make sure to turn it back on as soon as possible to keep your data protected.
Curious to know more? Read on to learn the perks of an always-on VPN and how to sidestep any downsides.
Keep Your Connections Private with CyberGhost VPN
Step 1: Subscribe to CyberGhost VPN.
Step 2: Download and install the correct app for your device.
Step 3: Login and connect to a server near you. That’s it!
Why Should Your VPN Always Be On?
Keeping your VPN on all the time is one of the best ways to protect your online activity. Every time you connect to the internet, your data—like the websites you visit, your location, and your IP address—can be tracked or intercepted. A VPN stops this by encrypting your connection, making it extremely difficult for anyone to monitor what you do online.
With your VPN running, your data is protected from cybercriminals, nosy advertisers, and even your Internet Service Provider (ISP). This means you can browse, shop, and stream without worrying about your personal information being exposed. It also helps you bypass location-based content blocks or restrictions, letting you access what you need wherever you are.
Benefits of Keeping Your VPN Always On
Secure Public Network Connections
Internet access is easy to find on the go, with libraries, hospitals, coffee shops, and other businesses offering free public Wi-Fi. While convenient, these public networks often lack strong security measures, making them prime targets for cybercriminals.
A VPN enhances security on any connection, including public Wi-Fi and hotspots. Quality VPNs use strong encryption to protect your data, making it unreadable to anyone who might intercept it. By keeping your VPN on, you can use public networks freely without the constant worry of data privacy risks.
Increase Your Overall Online Privacy
Cybercriminals aren’t the only ones who may try to monitor your online activity. On both public and private networks, your ISP can track your internet activity, and in some areas, they’re required to retain these records for several years. During this time, your data may be accessed through government requests.
Many websites and apps also monitor your behavior to gather data on your viewing habits, purchases, and search history, often for targeted advertising. Even some VPNs may collect and share your data if they don’t have a strict no logs policy.
Using a VPN with robust encryption and a verified no-logs policy makes it difficult for anyone to monitor your online activity or view your personal information. Just be sure to choose a VPN that doesn’t collect, share, or sell your data.
Maintain Unfiltered Access to Content, Sites & Services
Certain content, including news programs, streaming services, and even banking apps, may be restricted based on location or censored in specific regions. Schools, workplaces, and other organizations may also block access to certain websites to control bandwidth or limit distractions.
An always-on VPN lets you avoid censorship by connecting to servers in regions where content is accessible. For example, if you’re vacationing outside the US but need to access your US-based banking app, simply connect to a US server to log in without issues. Or, if you want to access local news while traveling, you can switch to a nearby server to view it. With a VPN on at all times, you can access the content and services you rely on, no matter where you are.
Avoid ISP Throttling
Activities like gaming, streaming, and torrenting require a lot of bandwidth, and many ISPs respond by throttling, or slowing down, your connection during these activities. This can lead to lag, buffering, and interruptions that disrupt your experience.
With an always-on VPN, your ISP can’t see your online activity, so they’re less likely to throttle your connection. You’ll be able to enjoy your favorite online activities with fewer interruptions and without worrying about being slowed down.
Are There Downsides to Keeping My VPN Always On?
Leaving your VPN on continuously has a few potential downsides, but most can be managed with the right provider and settings.
Reduced Speeds
VPN encryption can sometimes slow down your internet speed, especially if your provider doesn’t use high-speed servers. If you’re noticing a slowdown, it might be time to switch to a lightning-fast VPN.
Look for a provider with high-speed servers and advanced network infrastructure, like CyberGhost’s 10+ Gbps network cards, to ensure you always have fast, reliable speeds—even with strong encryption. This way, you can keep your VPN on without compromising performance.
Constant Server Switching
When you’re traveling, changing locations on your laptop or mobile device can be frustrating if you have to manually switch servers. Without updating your VPN to match each new network, you may lose access to certain services.
CyberGhost VPN makes this process easy with features like WiFi Auto Detect for Android and iOS. Simply enable this setting, and the app will automatically detect new networks and connect you to a nearby server. On your laptop, enable Auto Connect to ensure you’re protected on any new network without the hassle of manual switching. With these features, you can keep your VPN on and stay protected wherever you go.
Data & Bandwidth Limits
If your VPN provider limits data or bandwidth, keeping it on continuously could cause you to reach your limit quickly, leaving you unprotected unless you’re willing to pay extra.
To avoid this, choose a VPN with features that include unlimited data and bandwidth, like CyberGhost. With unlimited resources, you can keep your VPN on without worrying about running out of protection or facing additional fees.
Pros and Cons of Keeping a VPN Always On
Pros | Cons |
Enhanced security on public Wi-Fi networks, making data unreadable to potential attackers. | Reduced chances of ISP throttling by masking bandwidth-heavy activities. |
Increased online privacy by preventing ISPs and websites from tracking and collecting user data. | Potential slower internet speeds due to encryption, especially with servers far from your location. |
Unrestricted access to geographically restricted content, bypassing censorship and location blocks. | Manual or frequent server switching may be required while traveling to maintain access to specific. |
When to Turn Off Your VPN
While keeping your VPN on most of the time is beneficial, there are some specific situations where temporarily turning it off might make sense. Here’s when you might consider it:
When You Need Faster Speeds for Certain Tasks
VPNs encrypt your data, which can sometimes slow down your connection, especially if you’re using a server far from your location. If you’re doing high-bandwidth activities like gaming, video calls, or large file uploads and notice a slowdown, temporarily turning off your VPN can give you a speed boost. Just remember to switch it back on afterward.
When Accessing Services That Block VPNs
Some banking apps, streaming services, or specific websites block VPN usage for security reasons or due to regional restrictions. If you’re having trouble accessing these services, you may need to turn off your VPN to proceed. Consider using split tunneling if your VPN provider offers it. This lets you keep your VPN on for other apps while bypassing it for select ones.
While Troubleshooting Network Issues
If you’re experiencing connectivity problems, your VPN could be causing a conflict with your network. Temporarily disabling your VPN can help you determine if it’s the source of the issue. Once the problem is resolved, turn it back on to maintain your privacy and security.
When Connecting to Trusted Networks
If you’re on a highly secure, trusted network—like a private network at home with strong security settings—you might choose to turn your VPN off temporarily. However, be cautious, as even home networks can be vulnerable to certain types of attacks.
Keeping Your VPN On All The Time Protects You Online
The benefits of keeping your VPN on outweigh the downsides, especially if your VPN offers unlimited data and strong privacy features. With a reliable, no-limits VPN like CyberGhost, you can reduce or even eliminate potential issues associated with running a VPN 24/7.
Download CyberGhost VPN to stay protected around the clock. You’ll get unlimited data and bandwidth, access to a wide network of servers, and features that make it easy to keep your VPN on wherever you go.
FAQ
No, it’s actually recommended that you keep your VPN always on. However, some VPNs may reduce your streaming, torrenting, or gaming speeds if they don’t offer fast servers. You may also need to switch servers frequently while traveling.
With CyberGhost, you can avoid these issues. Our 10 Gbps servers keep your speeds fast, and WiFi Auto Detect for iOS and Android automatically detects new networks, making it easy to connect to the best server with just a tap.
Keeping your VPN on is recommended to protect your data and hide your IP. If you need direct access to specific apps that aren’t compatible with VPNs, you can use split tunneling to keep your VPN on only for certain apps. For example, you could route personal apps through the VPN and allow work-related apps to connect directly.
CyberGhost makes split tunneling simple, so you can customize your protection without turning your VPN off entirely.
Yes. Even on a home network, ISPs can track your activity, and in some regions, they’re required to keep this information. Cybercriminals can also exploit vulnerabilities in home networks.
A VPN like CyberGhost hides your IP address and encrypts your data, protecting your privacy at home just as it does on public networks.
If you’re having trouble, try switching to a different server. If that doesn’t work, reinstall the VPN app. For additional help, CyberGhost’s customer support is available 24/7 via live chat or email, and our Help Center offers in-depth troubleshooting guides for every device.

Hi, Dorota
That depends, really. If the application you’re trying to install uses GPS to determine your location, as is often the case with smartphone apps, then a VPN alone won’t be enough.
While it is possible, we cannot recommend spoofing your GPS location, since this is usually against the terms and conditions of app stores. Again, it is possible.
If you’re using Android, you can try looking for an open-source solution on the F-Droid marketplace.

Hi, Lanza
Your initial instinct is correct, the email you received is likely a phishing attempt. cyberghost.info is not a domain we operate, CyberGhost does not issue security reports about email accounts or ask for any account information whatsoever.
If you did not click any links or download any of the files from the email in question, your inbox is likely safe. For some extra peace of mind, we recommend strenghening your email password and following our guide to online security.
Stay safe,

I cannot read some of BBC News articles from their website whilst using CyberGhost:-
This is the error message I get.
Error: 410 Gone
Your client has made a request for a BBC domain that is no longer hosted on Akamai, but the request was sent to an Akamai IP address. This suggests your client is using a very out-of-date DNS response, or one that has been altered. If you’re using VPN software or similar, try disabling it and / or contact your VPN provider’s technical support.

Hi Michael. So sorry for the confusion, I’m sure it was frustrating! Our support center actually has a great guide for what to do when you reach the maximum number of devices. If you go to your account in the app and select VPN, you can delete a device. That will clear up a slot so you can use CyberGhost on your new phone! Ciao Cyberghost,
Foto
Mail
Messaggi su Whatsap.
Come è potuto accadere?

I have sent several email in an attempt to let you know I have paid twice for a subscription without receiving any answer. I have repeatedly asked for a phone number so I can clear this up without any response. Now I received two charges for using the VPN in London, 4/12 for $78.00 and 4/16 for $31.00. This was charged on my credit card and I would like to speak to management about this and the other issue. Please contact me to discuss.
Sincerely,
