Direct access to the Google Play Store makes it straightforward to set up a VPN on your Android TV or Google TV. Here’s the quick version:

1. Open the Google Play Store and search for CyberGhost VPN.

How to Set Up a VPN on Amazon Fire TV

How to Use a VPN on a TV Without App Support

If your TV runs on Tizen, webOS, Roku OS, or another system that doesn’t support VPN apps, you can’t install CyberGhost VPN. But there are still four ways to set it up.

Option 1: Configure CyberGhost VPN on Your Router

Setting up CyberGhost VPN on your router covers every device on your network at once, including TVs that don’t support VPN apps. It takes a little more setup than the other methods, but once it’s done, your Smart TV and everything else on your Wi-Fi network are automatically covered.

Before you start, make sure your router is compatible with VPN configurations and that you have an active CyberGhost VPN subscription. Then download your configuration file:

1. Log in to your CyberGhost VPN account and open the Download Hub from the sidebar. Scroll down to Other Apps > Routers or other devices and click Configure.

2. Choose the OpenVPN protocol, a country server, and a server group. Enter a device name and select the security features you want (we recommend enabling all). Then click Save Configuration.

3. You can now click Download Configuration to download the file.

If your router runs different firmware but has a configurable OpenVPN client, you can set it up through its admin page. You’ll need your router’s private IP address, username, and password to log in. This information is usually provided in a setup email or printed on a sticker on the router. Once you’re in, follow the steps below, though they may vary slightly by model:

1. Go to Advanced > VPN Client.
2. Check the box next to Enable and save the setting.
3. Go to the Server List section and click Add.
4. Enter a description (name for your VPN), choose OpenVPN as the VPN type, and add the username and password from your CyberGhost VPN account. Upload the .ovpn file you downloaded earlier and click Save.
5. Back in the Server List section, turn on the Enable option.
6. Go to the Device List section and click Add.
7. Select the devices that should connect to the VPN automatically, then click Save.

Option 2: Share Your VPN Connection Over Wi-Fi

Your computer can act as a VPN-connected Wi-Fi hotspot, and once your TV joins it, it’s covered too. The exact steps depend on your computer’s operating system.

On Windows 10 or 11

1. Go to Settings > Network & Internet > Mobile Hotspot.

2. Click Edit and set your hotspot’s network name and password.

3. Under Share my internet connection over, choose Wi-Fi.

4. Toggle Mobile Hotspot on.

5. Open CyberGhost VPN and connect to a server.
6. Connect your Smart TV to your computer’s Wi-Fi hotspot.

On macOS

1. Connect your computer to your router with an Ethernet cable. You may need an adapter if your Mac doesn’t have an Ethernet port.
2. Go to System Settings and select General > Sharing.

3. Navigate to Internet Sharing in the list of services, don’t toggle it on yet. Click on the “i” information icon first.

4. In the pop-up box under the Share your connection from menu, choose CyberGhost VPN from the list of options.

5. In the To devices using section, select Wi-Fi.
6. Select Wi-Fi Options and set your hotspot name and password. Under Security, choose WPA2/WPA3 Personal, then click OK.

7. Turn Internet Sharing on, then click Done in the dialog box.

8. Open CyberGhost VPN and connect to your preferred server.
9. Connect your Smart TV to your computer’s Wi-Fi hotspot.

Option 3: Share Your VPN Connection via Ethernet

Prefer a wired setup? You can share your computer’s VPN connection with your TV over an Ethernet cable. If your computer doesn’t have an Ethernet port, an adapter works too. The exact steps depend on your computer’s operating system.

On Windows 10 or 11

1. Go to Start > Control Panel > Network and Internet.

2. Select Change adapter settings (labeled Show Network Connections on some versions).

3. Right-click your computer’s Ethernet port and select Properties.

4. Open the Sharing tab and check the Allow other network users to connect through this computer’s Internet connection option.

5. Under Home networking connection, select Local Area Connection from the dropdown, then click OK.

6. Connect to a server in the CyberGhost VPN app.
7. Connect your computer to your Smart TV with an Ethernet cable.

On macOS

1. Go to System Settings > General > Sharing.

2. Select Internet Sharing in the list of services, but don’t toggle it on yet. Instead, click on the “i” information icon next to it. 

3. On the pop-up menu, under the Share your connection from menu, choose Ethernet Adapter.

4. In the To devices using section, toggle on Ethernet Adapter.

5. Turn Internet Sharing on, then click Done in the dialog box.

6. Open CyberGhost VPN and connect to your chosen server.
7. Connect your computer to your Smart TV with an Ethernet cable.

Option 4: Set Up Smart DNS

One important note: Smart DNS isn’t a VPN. It changes your DNS settings but doesn’t encrypt your traffic, so it won’t add the privacy and security a full VPN connection does. 

Here’s how to set it up:

1. Log in to your CyberGhost VPN account and turn on Smart DNS. You may need to register your current IP address so the service recognizes you.
2. Copy the DNS server addresses that CyberGhost VPN provides.

4. Save your settings, then reconnect your TV to the internet.

Roku TVs don’t allow DNS changes on the device itself. To use CyberGhost Smart DNS with Roku, you’ll need to configure Smart DNS on a compatible DD-WRT router.
